Appleworks has a line limit. I don't remember what it is in v3.0, but a
540K file probably exceeds it by a bit.
I seem to recall that the expander addon programs increased the limit to
something like 23,000 lines for pre-v3.0 copies and I don't know how
well that carried over into 3.0.
