I'm successfully running 9.41.0ubuntu2-feisty1 (extra version info 
supplied by packages) on Linux Mint an ubuntu based distro. The cedega 
package is version 5.2 but the latest is 6. I've successfully used 
Cedega with Linux distros which didn't have their own wine package.

It could be something in the configuration or possibly a missing MS library.

I suppose that VmWare would be the next best option. Perhaps even better 
as there are a few minor issues I've had such as the viewer clipping the 
edge of the document.
