With vintage monitors, the first (shotgun) fix is usually to replace
all the electrolytic capacitors on the board and see what happens.
However this doesn't really sound like a cap problem to me. I'd power
the unit up, wait for the problem to appear, then start spraying
semiconductors with freeze spray.

However, working on monitors is hazardous; usual disclaimers apply. If
it was me, I'd just grab another monitor on eBay. At a pinch you can
use a TV set. I'm currently using an LCD VGA monitor connected through
a $50 NTSC-to-VGA converter box.

I'm trying to do exactly this right now, and I haven't managed to get
it working yet. I'm probably doing something wrong, I intend to try
again this weekend.
