As others have already mentioned, this is due to the dither pattern of
the standard GS desktop interfering with the converter you're chosen.

I'm not aware of any converter that doesn't have either this or similar
problems, but there are work arounds.  

There are inits and/or DA's that can change the periwinkle blue desktop
to a different solid color.  You could choose the color to minimize the
effect.

There is also the DeskPic.Init initialization file that implements a
form of wallpaper on the GS desktop.  There are limitations -- the
picture must be in the GS system palette.  I alternate between a
Japanese anime character and a giant surfing apple (not because I use
a scan converter but because I hate periwinkle blue).

A more drastic measure would be to install Sheppy's grayscale init,
which will convert the system palette to grayscale (giving you a gray-
scale desktop).

These should be on the standard ftp sites (the grayscale init can be
found on sheppyware.net), but if you can't find them, let me know.  I'll
send them to you.
