Well, if you're not going to use Apple II hardware/software, easier methods 
exist. See Free Pascal (FPC) or FreeBasic. Both have an IDE now. Both support 
multiple platforms and both have a significant amount of users. Significant 
may be subjective however and dependent upon platform. FPC also supports 
Borland Pascal features.
