46* normal full-size and (I think) about 10 to 12 small and other
special katakana, plus the "circle" and "two little strokes" marks would
cover all possible uses. You need 48 full-size katakana if you want to
have the two* characters that were retired from use in 1946.
All this adds up to slightly less than 64, so it should fit in.
DISCLAIMER: I've never touched an actual J-Plus, so all of this is
speculation.
*Is Katakana "WO" actually still being used for anything other than
keeping up symmetry with the hiragana table? Obviously you'd need it on
the Apple though, since hiragana were not available.
