A USB-to-serial dongle would be the cheapest way to go...maybe $20-$30, with
maybe another $10-$15 for cables and adapters (Mac-to-modem cable with
hardware handshaking, null modem adapter, DB-25-to-DB-9 adapter). Any
decent computer store should still have all of those in stock.
