I would like to see a site like MobyGames.com that also includes links
to disk images of the games in archive sites with detailed information
about the images including:
does the image work correctly?
which version is the image? (many games had multiple releases - like
Infocom)
does the image include any patches? (bug fixes, cheats, added joystick
support...)
Is the image pristine? (no high scores, no saved characters, etc.)
Has the image been tested to the end of the game?
does the image have a crack screen?
If this information could be user editable (a la Wiki), over time we
would have a good list of disk images that are good (and bad).
Example of how this site would be helpful:
I noticed recently that someone found a problem with the Time Zone
images on Asimov recently. The information about the bad disk image
could be noted on the site and maybe someone else could upload a new
image that works to an archive. That person could make a note on the
site about it so the next person to download the game would be able to
find the working copy (and avoid the bad copy).
So many times when I have looked for an old game online, I have found
multiple images on various sites, and didn't know which one was best.
Many images don't work at all, some have bugs, and some are bad
cracks. There doesn't seem to be any site that tracks this sort of
thing.
Anyway, if someone wanted to make a new site, this is something I
think that would be useful to a lot of people that I haven't been able
to find anywhere.
