Why not consider helping with an existing site? We have several sites which
equate into a lot of redundant effort... and we have a few sites that have
successfully niched and do one or a few things very well.

A site should be created for a reason. Optimally, because there is a need for
it to exist, and a passionate person or team behind it to drive it forward.

Ask yourself the tough question - why do you want to start a new site? Because
you want to give something back to the community only scratches the surface.
Almost everyone is willing give back, in some fashion or another if they can
but starting a whole new site should have a deeper motivation.

What are you planning to do that is new or better than whats out there now?
What do you want to accomplish?

Whatever you do, good luck with it and I hope it gives you a lot of personal
satisfaction.
