Well, for sure the UCSD Pascal disks where single sided. and the package 
came with 2, or more disks. On the other hand, the UCSD system also 
benefited from having two separate drives to use to separate disks.

So, no, they did not necessary use both sides. However, as others pointed 
out, it don't really seem that the "dirt" issue I pointed out was ever a 
real issue.

And, I would have to say that *most* games that needed two sides were flippy 
disks. However, some exceptions obviously did exist...

of couse, my 10 meg hard disk Davong drive still works on my apple II....
