what am i missing on this auction to make this particular apple II go for so
much?

Serial number 1298 - oldest-style keyboard, toggle switch power
supply, integer ROMs (is that a programmer's aid chip in there, too?),
zipper case - what's not to love?

Actually, the PCB serial number is 1579. Mine's older (1478) :-). In my dotage I'll probably sell it to defer nursing home costs. Until then, you'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

And those are date codes, right--the 15th week of 1979 and the 14th week
of 1978?

When you consider the actual selling price for this system, I think that
"fluke" is appropriate. Apple II's in good condition aren't *that*
rare. But, given the right bidders in a collectors market, and you
have the perfect storm. ;-)

I would say the condition as well as what came with it made the price that high, also someone really wanted it. I had several items up last year and one buyer told me after he won that he would have paid whatever it took and by what it finally sold for I agree. I still have a bunch of Apple II and gs stuff that in time I might put up.

If I were paying that kind of money on "condition", I think I'd want
considerably more detailed photos or actual physical inspection.

I think that auctions like this are the result of two people who
get into the attitude that they'll pay "whatever it takes", and
that leads to prices that are a few sigma away from the norm.

This happens every once in a while on almost anything.
Sellers love buyers with more money than time. ;-)

This behavior is no predictor of what would happen to the same
or a similar auction a week earlier or later.
