Simple. Apple owns the material. It's copyrighted. Apple has LICENSED Syndicomm
to distribute it legally.
Apple has been contacted several times asking for Appleworks, APDA materials,
etc to be released into free ware, or at least freely distributable. They've
always said no, with the exception of Apple Australia granting someone (I
forget who) privileges to scan the manuals that come with the Apple IIGS.
Most of what you said, I agree with on the surface. I'm all for free this and
that, share and share alike. If I'm entitled to it.
Got a beef with Syndicomm? Take it to Sheppy.
