Agreed, Bev--but by this time, many AW users had already shipped their
disks back and forth to their Beagle Buddies a few times for transitions
from earlier versions, and were tired of figuring out what was current
and what needed updating.  Just another layer of nuisance characteristic
of any slightly incompatible upgrade...

As you know, whenever you present a user with an option that in turn
requires other actions, the possibilities of error grow rapidly.  This
means more user uncertainty, more support issues, and more reluctance
to move until you really *need* to.

Appleworks was the most widely used program ever on the Apple II series,
perhaps on any microcomputer prior to the PC.  The vast majority of
those users were just that--users--and they used it because it was
an amazing synthesis of simplicity, power, and convenience.  Dealing
with a lengthy list of (conditional) steps to make an upgrade was not
what they signed up for--and most of them didn't do it.
