It was more along the line that since I run the IIgs with the cover off, I can
rely on the diagnostic lights to tell me what is going inside the GS. You can
tell how well the ZipGS is caching. And it turned out to be very useful to
troubleshoot network problems by watching the lights on the LanceGS. The
hardware developers didn't stick lights on these cards just so the dust bugs
had something to read by inside the GS :)
And for my next trick, I'll write a program to make lights blink to the tune of
'Wizards of Winter' by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra :)
I often glance at the lights on my 1MB card to see the bank activity.
Having the cover off to improve air flow can be applied to other computers as
well. I find that some mini Tower PCs run better with their covers off too (to
avoid heat-related crashes). Maybe I just have bad luck getting PCs with fans
that suck (or rather the fans don't suck which cause the heat build-up :).
I usually run my //e with the top off, since I often want access.
And I have run several PCs with sides off for lower operating
temperatures.
There are a (very) few devices that actually depend on the case
being closed to obtain proper air ducting, but they are usually
obvious when you look inside.
