In the county I live in, we have a "transfer station" that
transports all of our
"garbage" to another state. I think they dump it in the desert. It
used to be a dump. now they have grass growing all over it, probably
in anticipation of $800k luxury homes that will be built there in a
few years.
the old dump (stopped being dump in ?1990?) has drainage ditches/
pipes built into it. during the winter the water is collected in
tanks. Then a big semi truck comes and sucks the liquid out of the
tanks into it's own. The truck is labeled "leachate". The tank is
driven about 40 miles away and dumped in the river.
lead, mercury, lithium, solvents, oil products, paints, etc etc
etc.
in the river.
so we don't have to deal with it trickling all over our hills... we
want it to rain down on us next season.
