If it means 'veiled', why on earth do we use it to basically mean
'unveiled'? Google translates 'voila' from French to English as
'veiled' butwww.thefreedictionary.comgives the following definition:
"Used to call attention to or express satisfaction with a thing shown or
accomplished."

If it meant 'veiled' it wouldn't be used to call attention to something
that is shown. :-)

I went to www.dictionary.com and found this (and more):

voila
1739, from Fr., imperative of voir "to see" + la "there."

Online Etymology Dictionary, 2001 Douglas Harper

So it is apparently one of those words formed by combining
words, then forgetting how it was done. ;-)

Like "Goodbye": (God be (with) ye.).
