Are you using a Super Serial Card? You should be able to follow the
setup instructions for ADT on the Apple side (IN#(your slot), CTL-A 6B
<ENTER>) and then type "CATALOG" in your hyperterminal session and
have your Apple catalog the disk. If you are still getting gibberish
at this stage, check that its set to 300 baud, and that the parity and
stop bits are also set correctly. Have you tested the serial cable
between two other devices?

FYI, I had trouble when setting up ADT initially. I ended up
abandoning Hyperterminal for TeraTerm Pro (free - just use google.) I
set both a character delay *and* a line delay (the line delay was
rather high, as I remember - maybe 750ms?), which fixed the problem
for me. I never figured out why Hyperterminal didn't do it for me, but
TeraTerm let me send the ADT bootstrap without a problem. YMMV.
