No, the Unidisk 3.5" drives work fine.
The Liron controller and slot 5 in the IIgs
are both Smartport controllers.

Yep, or if you have Unidisk 5.25 drives, they work fine
connected to the disk port in the back of the IIgs.

Although this is true for disk only systems,
you could get a CF adapted drive, Microdrive
from GSE-Reactive, or a CFFA from Rich Dreher.
Another solution is a Focus card and a CF-44
pin adapter and use a CF card with that.

Also, a Superdrive or the Bluedisk would give
you a 1.44MB solution. I use that for a quick-fix
solution when I don't want to hook everything up.
