This is why you need that nifty monitor stand (for the Apple /// monitor)
even if you have the Monitor ][ or the AppleColor Composite monitor...

You set your machine up with the disk drives stacked on the left or right
side of the unit (I prefer the right as I am right handed) and the
monitor sitting on the monitor stand, the stand straddling the unit.

That way, when the sound annoys you, you do this:

a) Slide the Apple ][ towards you until the back edge clears the front
   edge of the monitor stand

b) Lift up on the back edge of the case lid, tip the lid up all the way
and slide it out (assuming your machine *has* a lid. For the real
classic Apple ][ experience, you should run the machine with the lid on
the floor, propped up against the side of the desk, or laying on top of
   the monitor)

c) Reach into the machine and grab the black un-jacketed twisted pair
cable near the front of the board

d) Pull hard until the 2-pin Molex connector pops off of its pins (it is
   neither latched nor keyed)

e) (optional; see (b)) Re-attach the machine lid

f) Slide the Apple in under the monitor stand

g) Enjoy the silence

TRIVIA: There are (g) steps in this procedure. Fittingly enough,
PRINTing a CHR$(7)...a Control-G...beeps the speaker for 1/10 of a second.
