Yes, but apart from the use of the s100 bus backplane there was little
else in common between a MITS Altair and any s100 based system that
came later, IMSAI, Cromemco, dynabyte, north star, sol, etc.

You'll have to admit that "clone" in this context has a sligthly
different meaning, as these systems' compatibility is limited to the
fact that the boards were to be plugged in an s100 backplane, and very
often these boards were not even interoperable between them. The
software side of things is also missing in this equation (could hardly
be).
