I never used 6809 so I don't have an opinion.
As a hardware guy I did use Z80 and loved it.
Apart from the success in the marketplace z80 has:
1. Advanced hardware for the time (single 5 volts power, fully static
registers)
2. 16 bit operations on register pairs
3. dual set of registers - great for interrupt handling
4. transparent memory refreshing.
5. Architecture that is far from perfect but quite usable.
And on and on.
Anyway I only expressed my *opinion*.
