A (standard) tape recorder is an analog device that is supposed to record a
wide dynamic range of signals. If the head is magnetized the very low level
signals are lost and the dynamic range  (and signal to noise ratio) go down.

For a disk that only cares about 1s and 0s it's not an issue.
