To me, the great 'tragedy' of the end of the Apple II was the
disappearance of the hobbyist-class computer. It's the primary reason
(aside from nostalgia) that I'm still so attached to them.

Any further model post the IIGS would've had to either sacrifice the
hobbyist appeal or end up being a niche market product. The Macintosh
filled the former criteria, the latter has no place in the product line
of a personal computer company from an economic standpoint.
