Buy an stealth or a griffin technologies serial port for the g4. It
replaces the modem and behaves as a standard (older mac) serial port.
Boot your g4 in os9 and select this port in the appletalk control
panel. Install Localtalk bridge (os9) in order to gain access to the
ethernet part of the network.

For the powerbook, the only option is to look for an asante or dayna
appletalk to ethertalk bridge, and then plug one side of the bridge to
the gs's localtalk port and the other to your ehernet switch/hub, or
straight to the powerbook (will also work for the g4).

If you're running osx, look for (I have to check which one was it) and
edit the .plist where you can enable old-fashion appletalk afp services
(instead of only appletalk over ip afp). This will work work for
ethernet (Ethertalk), but I'm not sure for localtalk (I think it won't
drive the serial port no matter what under osx).
