If all that's needed is a digital up/center/down, right/center/left indication, then it's not necessary to keep polling the joystick inputs. You can trigger them, then test twice at the "boundary times" between the left/center and center/right zones (similarly for up/center/down). If you keep track of elapsed time to pick the right times to check, no other polls need to be done.
