While I think that's a bit of an oversimplification, I must agree that
a similar feeling hit me when I first heard of the name change. Not
necessarily a punch in the gut, but damn close, even though I knew it
was logically justified from all the new products they've been
introducing lately. Woz said it took him completely by surprise. Oh
well - to me, an Apple II freak who's had no use whatsoever for Macs
(aside from observational interest in OS X as the only remaining
differentiating factor in today's personal computing spectrum), they
will always be APPLE COMPUTER.
Did anyone catch Stephen Colbert last night?
"Meanwhile, at the Macworld conference in San Francisco, Apple Computer
changed their company name to Apple, Inc., earning them a wag of my
finger! Sorry, Apple, but just dropping the word "computer" from your
name doesn't make you cool. A nerd who gets contacts and a trendy
haircut is still a nerd - or had you forgotten that your co-founder
Steve Wozniak owns laser pointers in every color and plays in a Segway
polo league? (Friend of the show.)"
Thought that was hilarious. Woz was on the Report a few months ago and
Stephen was clearly starstruck - he was breaking character all over the
place and acting like a little kid. Woz said in a later interview with
Guy Kawasaki that people had written him saying they'd never seen
Stephen act that way before. :)
