re: what new 8-bit software / port would you want?

I'd like to see a ][+ port of a few games...

I think that's already been done has it not? It probably wasn't very
good port. I know Galaxian (the first in that series) was ported. The
sound/noise was about as annoying as the original. ;-)

I've never seen Galaga on an Apple o.o

   * Atari Adventure

That would be easy. And would take absolutely no graphics skill to
port that one. Reminds me of a funny Strongbad quote: "Somebody get
that frickin' duck away from me!"

LOL.

   * complete Pitfall

You mean the first one? I know pitfall 2 was ported to the //, as well
as many other second-wave of activision titles like H.E.R.O.

Yes. And maybe some other old Atari 2600 games.

   * Super Mario Land

Welllll.... maybe. the Gameboy screen is 160x144 -- so it technically
fits for B&W. Not so if you want to use two adjacent pixels to
simulate the grayscale though. So if you don't mind it being purely
B&W then I guess it would work. Grayscale simulation wouldn't work
unless you made it in DHGR with borders. Then you could fake it with
dithered patterns. Wouldn't look too nice though. Not sure how a 8mhz
Z80 stacks up against a 1mhz 6502 though. To keep the framerate high,
it might be necessary to offload sound to a dedicated card (e.g.
mockingboard)

Pure B&W should be fine...

and would it even be possible to port these to the //e?

   * Castlevania
   * Contra/Gryzor
   * Gradius/Nemesis

//gs definately. Not a //e though. The best DHGR platformers I've
played were the maxx out series ports of Antirad/Rad Warrior and
Spiderbot. But they didn't have great framerates. In the meantime,
you might look for a copy of Thexder, which isn't much like Gradius,
but is pretty fun anyway.
