It's a forgivable turn of phrase, though, considering how thoroughly 
Apple dominates the space.

Since you didn't assert "built-in" here while you were careful to above, 
I get to say that you're wrong. There are certainly recording options 
for the iPod.

Probably for a reason related to the fact that the lack of those 
features doesn't seem to be substantially harming their adoption rate. 
Bluntly, they're only advantages to those who will use them. To everyone 
else, building them in represents an increase in complexity (of design 
and of user experience) and a perceived extraneous cost.

That's not actually true. FM receivers for the iPod have been available 
from vendors other than Apple for quite some time, and from Apple itself 
for a year (and a day) now.
