There seems to be a lot of debate and mythology about that.

I always thought that is was from a numeric communication code
used by amateur (and other?) radio operators in the early days--
the same one in which 73 meant "best regards".

ISTR that 86 stood for "goodbye", meaning "this is my final
transmission".

I just tried to find a listing of the numeric codes and was
unsuccessful, but they used to be in the ARRL Handbook.
