Quick update:

After doing a bit of web research I used the following command to find
my USB port:

ls /dev/cu.* | sort | cat -n

which gives the following response:

   1  /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem
   2  /dev/cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync
   3  /dev/cu.Philip-1
   4  /dev/cu.modem
   5  /dev/cu.usbserial

so my serial port is port 5. Then I tried this (adding the part at the
end):

cd ~/a2gameserver
java -Djava.library.path=lib -cp lib:lib/RXTXcomm.jar:dist/ags.jar
ags.Main /dev/tty.usbserial apple2e

finally it starts to run through the init script...YAY!

The script gets all the way through to line 70 and then I get the
following messages:

Failure writing line, retrying...
Failure writing line, retrying...
Error in line 70: Error when sending text
/* running target DRIVER_ERROR */
/* executing line 109 */
Was not able to load driver due to unrecoverable communication errors.
/* executing line 110 */
/* running target END */
Didn't get an immediate response from the driver, trying a few
acknowledge tests.
ALERT: Didn't detect the apple driver is running.  Ensure it is started
(will retry in 20 seconds)
For example, try pressing ctrl-reset on the apple and typing CALL 2049
Retrying connection to apple
java.io.IOException: Failed to get response from driver after 3 retries
        at
ags.communication.TransferHost.testDriver(TransferHost.java:294)
        at ags.communication.TransferHost.init(TransferHost.java:90)
        at ags.Main.main(Main.java:74)

...so I believe I'm almost there. At this point maybe I just need to
play with the settings in the init script to get it working???

Will keep trying.
