My high school's library had a collection of Byte magazines going back 
to the late '70s. The older issues were full of interesting articles, 
including some cool hardware and software hacks for the Apple II and 
other 8-bit computers. This lasted until the early 1980s, but by about 
1985 Byte had become a boring PC-business-clone monoculture.
