I see where you're going, but can only think this: Premature
optimisation is the root of evil. It's a far, far better use of
programming effort to implement your ideas the simplest way, and see
how it performs.

There are many, many clever ways to convert an Apple II video buffer to
a 'standard' linear buffer, but if you're intending to do so I'd be
focussing effort on what produces the most visually appealing result
rather than what produces the most efficient transformation.

Machines capable of emulating the Apple II in realtime were cheap and
plentiful a decade ago. How about using some of the now excess cycles
on producing a more faithful emulation experience ?
