How about asking for directory contents?  Hit D and see if you get a
screenfull of stuff or not.  That is a pretty good test of connectivity
back and forth.  If the query for a file (size) fails and the GS says
so too, it might just be  that the file doesn't exist in that
directory, or has a slightly different name, or something.
