Warren, thanks for the response. I'm really only wanting to use the
serial connection because of mainly aesthetic reasons:

(a) it would free up a slot in the IIgs
(b) it would do away with the need for the unruly ribbon cable (which
is significantly shorter in length than the serial cable)
(c) I just wanted to use the IIgs printer port
(d) I thought other csa2 member's had posted success using the serial
port

I can certainly go back to using the parallel, but it would be my
preference to use the serial *if it worked*.

I'm pretty sure that people had reported success using the serial port
in combination with the harmonie printer drivers, however, maybe it is
limited to this - ie. any other type of usage without appropriate
driver fails (like in my case). The A2 FAQ is not clear on this point.

Thanks for your assistance, and thanks to the guys at Epson - its kewl
to think that my question went back to the source (even if their
memories are short).   ;-P
