Yes, I knew there was no sensor on the other side (for obvious
reasons).   What I was seeing made no apparent sense.   I had tried the
test about 6 times with 2 different floppies and 2 drives, and it was
being consistent.  However, last night, I retried the experiment, and
could not repeat the results (thank goodness) -- I was able to see the
same problematic floppy in GSOS that I could not see before (was
getting an FST not recognized error).

Lesson learned: when reality sucks, turn the machine off for awhile.
