IIRC, the Einstein compiler also had a run-time.  It's actually
pretty hard not to with the 6502.

Of course, some compilers generated in-line code for 16-bit integer
datatypes and control structures, which is better than using an
interpretive code for *everything*.

Hmmm... I may have used that... it was called Expediter ][ and it was
by Einstein...

I also used the Beagle Compiler.  All that stuff is packed somewhere.
I can't remember which did best.
