At some point (I forget exactly which version number - 2.1.x is coming
to mind, but may be incorrect), ProDOS was "split" into "ProDOS 8",
which would run on the 6502/65C02 based ("Pre-gs") Apples, as well as
the "convertible" 65C816 chip the IIgs was built around.
"ProDOS 16" was capable of running *ONLY* on the 65C816 equipped Apple
IIgs.

Prior that "split", you saw "ProDOS x.x.x" on the startup splash screen.
After the split, you saw "ProDOS 8 Vx.x.x" when you fired up the 8-bit
version.

(The IIgs could/can run either ProDOS 8 or ProDOS 16, since its 65C816
chip can be "converted" into a chip that, for practical purposes, is
pretty much indistinguishable from a "plain" 6502/65C02 by setting a
couple of processor flags - The 6502/65C02 machines can't run ProDOS 16
because it uses machine-language instructions, addressing modes, and
memory banking methods that simply don't exist in the 6502/65C02)
