Ok, so the j-plus arrived today.
For those who want to see the Apple II j-plus doing Japanese, you can
see it here:

And here is how it works:
POKE -16292,0 : activates the KATAKANA font set.
CTRL T : then toggles between english and KATAKANA.
POKE -16291,0 : activates inverse english text and turns KATAKANA off.
CTRL T : then toggles between regular and inverse text.
The KATAKANA fonts can not be inversed.
