I would almost always choose a "pull" model for updates over a "push" model, though I know that regular citizens aren't savvy enough to "pull".
And the sad part is the end result. Computer users who don't understand the basics of simple computing and maintenance. I've always believed and tend to preach that the user needs to learn as much as they can about general usage and maintenance of their hardware. Sometimes they listen but the majority simply ignore this responsibility. For them, it's easier to pay someone else to do this.
