CiderPress file name requirements

Tonight I tried to open some ShrinkIt archives that had a .txt
suffix, but that were identical to the .shk version except for
file name.

CiderPress wouldn't open them because they did not "appear to
be valid archives". This behavior persisted even when I selected
"reduced error checking".

Why does CiderPress care about the file suffix, instead of just
validating the header? I guess I was expecting ShrinkIt-like
behavior...

(The files were on a DVD, so it wasn't possible to just rename them.)
