Get an accelerator.

There are two hardware options: the ZipGS and TransWarp GS. I have owned
two ZipGSes, one of which was a little unreliable, and have inherited a
third one when a friend got rid of his IIgs system. I haven't had any
direct experience with the TransWarp GS.

The ZipGS was originally supplied at speeds of around 7 to 9 MHz, but I
forget how much cache RAM they support (at least 32 KB). If you have a
fast enough CPU and cache RAM, and get the right crystal, they can be
modified to run as fast as 14 MHz, though in some machines they need to
be limited to somewhat lower speeds to work reliably.

The ZipGS and TransWarp GS connect to the computer in the same way: they
are a slot card with a ribbon cable which is plugged into the processor
socket (the original 65C816 is removed). The card contains a faster
version of the processor.

The actual speed increase you get with an accelerator varies depending
on the task you are doing and what I/O and memory operations it
performs: at worst, it will run at the same speed as an unaccelerated
IIgs, but at best it might be three or four times faster.

If you are sorting a large AppleWorks spreadsheet, there will probably
be a large amount of data being accessed, and a lot of write operations
to memory, so the accelerator will be less effective, but I would still
expect to see at least a doubling in performance.
