Re: Questions about IIGS, hard drives, and booting different OSes...
Bill et al,
OK, I've got something working that is OK, and I was able to conduct
tests and figure things out thanks to the "Quad Booter" article from a
few years ago, at:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.apple2/browse_thread/thread/f5ad8a02fead5d7/03f5d6ade1286e99?lnk=gst&q=boot+basic.system&rnum=1#03f5d6ade1286e99
So anyway, I have GS/OS 6.01 installed on the first partition, but I
have renamed GSOS's "PRODOS" to "BOOT.GSOS" and copied/renamed the P8
file in the /SYSTEM folder to "PRODOS" in the root of the first
partition.
The result is: booting to Partition 1 fires up ProDOS 8 and launches
ProSEL8. I then have an item under ProSEL 8 that launches BOOT.GSOS via
a teeny AppleSoft program, and I choose it if I want GS/OS.
Why did I do all this, when I just could have held down the "8" key to
get ProDOS 8? Well, I want to be able to install the CFFA/CF card in my
//e whenever I want/need and use all that 8-bit software, and I can't
have a boot process on that CF card that a //e won't understand. This
also ruled out using TaifunBoot, which I tried, and concluded uses
graphics modes that a //e wouldn't understand. (If someone can correct
me on this, let me know.)
So Bill, thanks for the final advice, but now I think you can see that
there *is* a need to hack something together in this case - namely, a
single partition that both a //e and a GS can boot from. I guess you
missed that from one of my first posts in this thread. ;-)
