Re: IIgs won't start up -- ZipGS dead?
The socket in the IIgs motherboard is good for about 4 insertions.
How many licks does it take to get to the center of the IIgs
motherboard... a one...
A two.. a three.. dead.
The world may never know.
Especially if that thing has been installed for a long time.
now it's dead. IF you put back the CPU, you'll get a few more
inserstions out of it before that too is dead.
Nothing is wrong with anything except the socket. Change it out for a
machine pin socket and you're on your way.
The leads on the IDC ribbon header go straight down. The leads on the
DIP package IC are slightly outward pitched. They are also stiffer at
the top than the bottom so they do flex a tiny bit. Where as the DIP
IDC header is ridged and straight down, they are also slightly longer.
Those headers are designed to be plugged into a machine pin socket. Not
a cheapish tin DIP socket. The straight down force bends the internal
contacts out of the way and renders it useless. Moving it in and out a
few times does even more damage. Thats the reason why if I need to
take out an accelerator, I remove the 40 pin cable from the card
instead.
