It would have been interesting to hook a DFM (digital frequency meter)
to the 14M signal line and see what exactly the frequency was.

Could the problem be related to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator#Series_or_parallel_resonance
(although 30MHz is listed as the typical transition between the two
modes)?
