...ok, it *CAN* be done - with special training. But "hot plugging"
means that the decvice should be insertable, while the unit is
powered, by someone *without* special training.
The trick is to make sure the "ground" connection gets connected
first. Damage to devices is most likely to occur if power, plus
some signals, are connected while the ground is not yet connected.
Perhaps that guy have trained to insert the card in such a way to
make the ground connect first? And then he added some drama to it
of course....
In the PCMCIA connector, getting ground connected first is ensured
by making the ground pins (and there are several of them) longer than
the other pins.
