I think that modern flash programmed microcontrollers have taken the 
place of the early microcomputers in terms of usefullness for hardware 
hackers.  If you need sophisticated user interface you hook them to a 
PC.   If you need more functions than a single chip can handle, use a 
bigger chip or a couple of them, as they are only a few bucks each. If 
you want to program in BASIC use a STAMP chip.  Take a look at "Nuts and 
Volts" magazine and you will see what I mean. Surprisingly similar 
content to what Byte magazine had in the late 70's.  The art of HW 
hacking hasn't died at all, it has jumped to a different breed of processor.
