I always thought this a stunning example of corporate arrogance that
Microsoft thought their market position so strong that a globally
distributed client-server application architecture would not emerge.

But they plugged the leak, and it taken another decade the application
oriented web to begin to emerge.

It seems obvious that they intend to block rather than lead this
emerging market, no doubt because it just does not offer the same
margins as flogging an OS+Office suite. I feel that the market is
reaching the point where it just will not support entities of that size
who simply sell software, much of which is simple infrastucture.
