Java is actually a fairly simple language.  It's designers didn't want it
to be as big and complex as C++.

It's inefficient in hardware too.  When Intel introduced the 80186,
suddenly the multiply and divide operations were some three times faster
compared to the 8086.  This was because the microcode in the 8086 was
replaced by dedicated hardware in the 80186.

Also, the entire RISC movement was about making processors efficient by
eliminating the microcode inside them.
