Hmmmm, As a relatively youngster when this ad came out (I was born in
1974), I somehow vaguely recall seeing those controllers.  I would
guess either someone i knew had them or they were at school in the
80's.

They look like early joysticks to me.  Strangely enough, I recall that
I had the Apple Paddles BEFORE I ever got a joystick.  I had to get a
joystick because...well, the paddles just suckes for most of the action
games I played.  :D
