Disposablity leads to collectibility, I think. A good portion of the
collectibles market is concerned with items that were at one time so
common that people had no qualms about dumping them, the result being that
you end up with a relative scarcity of something that has a high profile
in pop culture. If you look at cars, for example, people have been hanging
on to their classics for years, but all the Pintos and Civics were driven
to death and then scrapped. Now those "disposable" cars have become
classics in their own right...
Personally, I was never into computers "back in the day", so so my view on
pricing is probably right in the middle... I'm not driven by nostalgia, as
some rabid collectors seem to be, nor am I jaded into thinking Apple II
gear is common as dirt (though, I think that attitude might have more to
do with geography than anything)... I tend to bid on items based on what I
think is a reasonable price to pay for how much use I expect to get out of
the item.
